Welcome to Defense Against The Dark Arts, today we begin our chapter on Dark wizards, creatures, and unforgivable curses throughout history, as the first unit of the term. There will be no lesson posted from June 20-July 3, and no questions or work will be taken. Your first quiz will be in July. Now, let's get started.

Dark wizards have been evil and vile throughout history. The two most famous dark wizards are Gellart Grindewald and Lord Voldemort, who were both anti-muggles that wanted pure blood or wizard supremacy. Gellart Grindewald was a brilliant wizard that befriended the Hogwarts Headmaster Albus Dumbledore. Gellart believed that wizards should have been in complete power, and that muggles should be enslaved and forced into exile, and was almost succesful, as he recruited a powerful army and killed many people who resisted him. However, Albus Dumbledore saw the terrible evils of Grindewald and challenged him to a duel. He came to victory and Grindewald was sentenced to life in Azkaban, where he later died. Lord Voldemort was even more powerful than Grindewald, and killed more than him. He recruited a vast army of pure and half-blood wizards that he called "Death Eaters" and had them do much of his bidding. Though most of the Death Eaters were put under his control or threatened into joining him, some did it by will because they were either promised a material reward or wanted to be powerful. Voldemort believed muggle borns and muggles should all be killed or exiled, and fought many of them. The only threat to him was Albus Dumbledore, and in 1998, he killed Dumbledore. However, the next year, Harry Potter killed Voldemort and made equality throughout the wizarding world. ((More about these wizards will be learned later in the term)) Some say there is another dark wizard on the rise, this is proboably true because most dark wizards seek power, and are brought to murder by greed. However, most have a point where they stop, but Grindewald and Voldemort did not. This concludes the first Defense Against The Dark Arts lesson, next is our lesson on Gellart Grindewald.
